Whether we like it or not, it is a bit of a numbers game. The more people you get into the top of your sales funnel, the more people you will have converting towards the bottom.

Building a bigger audience helps you to establish your authority and expertise in your niche. When your online presence is well established, it really can help to build trust and credibility with your ideal clients.

I’m afraid I really do sound a bit like a broken record when I get on to this subject, but it really is a numbers game. The bigger your audience, the bigger pool of potential students you have for any online courses / workshops / masterminds you may launch. Think of the difference between a 5% conversion from 100 people (5 sign-ups) vs 5% conversion from 1000 (50 sign-ups)!

Not only that, but a well-nurtured audience can be signing up to buy your courses before you’ve even written them because they’ve already been in your world for some time, and already know, like, trust and maybe even love you!

The larger your audience, the larger your email list is likely to be. This allows for more significant reach and impact when sending out your email marketing campaigns. I don’t want to mislead you on this point, however. It is important that you carry out regular housekeeping on your email list. Although it may seem a little hypocritical after what I’ve just said, a large but disengaged email list can actually affect the deliverability of your email campaigns. By conducting a “list clean-up” once a quarter or every 6 months, you ensure that your email list is really filled with people who want to hear and are likely to buy from you at some point, and not just hangers-on who don’t read but can’t be bothered to unsubscribe. It can also save you money, as most email providers cost on a sliding scale depending on how many subscribers you have on your list. I don’t want you to be paying higher fees to be sending emails that people don’t even read! I’m all about making your life easier.


5. Facilitating Collaboration Opportunities

A larger audience will also ensure that you are better positioned to be approached as a guest expert for other people’s podcasts / blogs / memberships. After all, everyone is looking to grow their own audience, so what better way to do that than to collaborate with someone else who also has a growing list of fans? That will open up both parties to each other’s audiences. Win-win!

6. Encouraging Word of Mouth Marketing

When you have a wider reach with your audience, you will also be more frequently tagged and recommended in social posts. These sorts of recommendations are priceless as they are social proof that people recommend you to others. Because it’s free, it is also a fabulously efficient way to grow your business! And we like free things, don’t we?

When you grow your audience, you also grow your community of fans. This community can become a source of encouragement, shared experiences and a loyal customer community. However, at the risk of being a Negative Nancy, I would like to warn against cheating your way to a larger audience by asking your friends and family to follow you / join your mailing list etc. Really, you only want people in your audience who are likely to buy from you. Anything else is purely vanity metrics and will not benefit your business one jot.


8. Increasing Social Impact

Most of us business owners want to help our ideal clients and improve their lives in some way. A larger audience means you can reach and positively influence more people, contributing to you being able to fulfil your mission and vision. It can also ensure that you are better able to make a positive difference in your community.
